Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the opposition in Assam, accusing them of neglecting the problems of farmers for decades. Modi's criticism came during his visit to the state on Saturday, December 20, 2025, where he inaugurated the New Terminal Building of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati and laid the foundation stone for a new urea production facility at the Namrup Fertiliser Plant in Naharkatia.

Modi asserted that previous Congress governments had prioritized vote-bank politics over the interests of indigenous communities and neglected the development of Assam and the Northeast. He alleged that the Congress had given protection to infiltrators who grabbed forests and land, threatening the security and identity of Assam. He stated that his government is correcting the "mistakes" the Congress party made in the region for decades.

The Prime Minister claimed that the opposition has openly adopted "anti-national agendas" and are defending "infiltrators" by criticizing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. He warned that their "anti-national mindset" could recreate the violence and unrest of earlier times. Modi emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant and united to defeat the opposition's conspiracies to prevent Assam's development from being derailed.

Modi highlighted the development projects initiated for Assam and the Northeast in the last 11 years, emphasizing the Union government's commitment to infrastructure-led growth and balanced regional development. He said that the new airport terminal and the upcoming urea plant are proof of his government's commitment to developing the northeast. The urea plant, with an estimated annual production capacity of 1.2 million metric tonnes, is expected to reduce dependence on fertiliser imports and ensure timely availability of urea for farmers across the region.

The Prime Minister also lauded the Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, for working to free Assam's resources from illegal and anti-national encroachments. He stated that the Union government has taken strict measures to stop infiltration, with identification processes underway to remove illegal infiltrators. Modi stressed that efforts are being made at every level to ensure Assam's resources benefit the people of Assam.

Modi affirmed that the world is looking towards India with hope, and the new sunrise of India's future is to begin from the Northeast. He expressed confidence that collective efforts will take Assam to new heights of development.
