Punjab's Holy Cities Enforce Ban: No Meat, Alcohol, or Tobacco Consumption Allowed Within Sacred Boundaries.

In a move to uphold the sanctity of significant Sikh religious sites, the Punjab government has officially banned the sale of meat, alcohol, and tobacco in the 'holy cities' of Amritsar, Talwandi Sabo, and Anandpur Sahib. This decision, announced by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday, December 21, 2025, follows the granting of 'holy city' status to these locations via an official notification.

The Chief Minister conveyed the news through a video message, emphasizing the profound religious and cultural importance of these cities. Amritsar is home to Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Talwandi Sabo houses Sri Damdama Sahib, and Anandpur Sahib is the location of Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib; these three cities are the location of three of the five most important Sikh Takhts. Mann extended his congratulations to the Sikh community, underscoring that these cities are not only religious centers but also vital symbols of Punjab's cultural heritage.

With the new status in effect, strict regulations will be implemented to ensure complete prohibition of meat, alcohol, tobacco, and other intoxicating substances within these areas. The government aims to maintain the religious atmosphere and respect the sentiments of devotees visiting these sacred places.

Furthermore, Chief Minister Mann assured that the Punjab government is committed to facilitating ease of movement for pilgrims. Plans are underway to provide facilities such as e-rickshaws, mini-buses, shuttle buses, and other public transport services to ensure devotees from around the world do not face any inconvenience. These measures are designed to support the anticipated increase in visitors and enhance their overall experience in the holy cities.

The decision to declare these cities as 'holy' was cemented last month during a special session of the Punjab Assembly in Anandpur Sahib, convened to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. A resolution was unanimously passed, reflecting the long-standing public demand for this recognition. Subsequently, on December 15, the state government officially issued the notification granting 'holy city' status to Sri Anandpur Sahib in Rupnagar district, Talwandi Sabo in Bathinda district, and the 'Galiara' area around the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

The Punjab government's initiative is expected to not only preserve the sanctity of these key Sikh pilgrimage sites but also spur development and provide enhanced facilities for both pilgrims and residents. By implementing the ban and improving infrastructure, the government aims to create an environment that is conducive to spiritual reflection and cultural preservation.
