The Shiv Sena-UBT has strongly criticized the Congress party following the Mahayuti alliance's dominant performance in the recent Maharashtra civic polls. The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) is struggling to accept the verdict of the local body polls. The Mahayuti alliance, consisting of the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, secured a significant victory, winning 207 posts of presidents in the 288 municipal councils and nagar panchayats. In contrast, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) opposition alliance, which includes Congress, could only manage a collective tally of 44.
Senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders have expressed their discontent, with some attributing the Mahayuti's win to the use of "money and muscle power". Sanjay Raut, a Shiv Sena (UBT) MP, alleged that the victory was due to "tampering" of EVMs and an overwhelming influx of money, which the opposition could not withstand. He claimed that the BJP and Shiv Sena spent exorbitant amounts, far exceeding the budgets of the municipal councils, during their campaigns.
The Congress party's performance in the polls has particularly drawn criticism. Once a dominant force in rural Maharashtra, the Congress only secured 28 civic bodies. This decline has led to accusations from within the Shiv Sena (UBT) that the Congress has become a "tourist party," implying a lack of seriousness and engagement in local issues. Furthermore, State Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal took an indirect swipe and congratulated the Election Commission for the assistance provided in connection with the ruling party.
In light of these results, there are ongoing discussions about potential alliances for upcoming municipal corporation polls. Anil Parab, a Shiv Sena (UBT) leader, mentioned that an alliance between his party and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) could be announced imminently. Sanjay Raut indicated that the specifics of this alliance, including seat distribution, would be revealed soon by Uddhav and Raj Thackeray.
Despite the opposition's allegations of unfair practices, leaders from the ruling Mahayuti alliance have hailed the results as a testament to their governance and development work. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis credited the party's performance to the work done by his government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised the alliance's performance, stating that it reflected the people's trust in their vision for development. Fadnavis noted the BJP had doubled their tally of corporators since 2017, with around 48% of the total corporators elected belonging to the BJP.
The State Election Commission reported a voter turnout of 67.3% in the first phase of the polls and 47.04% in the second phase. Elections were held for 288 urban local bodies across six administrative divisions in Maharashtra. While the Mahayuti alliance celebrates its victory, the opposition, particularly the Shiv Sena-UBT and Congress, faces introspection and strategic recalibration in the lead-up to future elections.
