Ex-IPS officer in critical condition after suicide attempt following Rs 8 crore online fraud loss.

Patiala, December 22, 2025 – Amar Singh Chahal, a former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, is in critical condition after an alleged suicide attempt at his residence in Patiala. The incident occurred on Monday, with police reporting that Chahal sustained a serious chest injury from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was immediately rushed to Park Hospital in Patiala, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

According to Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Varun Sharma, authorities were alerted to the situation after one of Chahal's friends received a message indicating his intentions. Police teams swiftly responded and found Chahal injured at his home.

A 12-page note, addressed to Punjab's Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, was recovered from the scene. In the note, Chahal detailed being a victim of a sophisticated online fraud, having lost Rs 8.1 crore to cyber thugs posing as wealth management advisors. He explained that the fraudsters operated through WhatsApp and Telegram groups, falsely claiming affiliations with reputable banks under the name "F-777 DBS Wealth Equity Research Group". They allegedly lured investors with promises of unusually high returns through stock trading, IPO allotments, OTC trades, and so-called "quantitative funds".

Chahal claimed that the fraudsters created fake dashboards to show inflated profits, building confidence and prompting him to deposit large sums. He was then pressured to reinvest profits and pay significant "service fees," "taxes," and other charges to withdraw his money. Despite making all payments through bank transfers, the withdrawals were never processed. According to sources, Chahal got in touch with the company in October 2025. Of the Rs 8.1 crore lost, Rs 1 crore was Chahal's own money, and Rs 7.1 crore was borrowed from friends and relatives.

Chahal also stated that he had contacted the company allegedly involved in the scam as early as October 2025 and had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman regarding the matter.

In his note, Chahal expressed deep distress, financial ruin, and emotional trauma, also apologizing to his family and colleagues. He maintained that no one except the alleged scammers was responsible for his decision. He urged authorities to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) or hand over the case to a specialized central agency to trace the money trail, emphasizing that the scam was highly organized and involved multiple bank accounts and individuals. He also requested protection and support for his family and asked creditors not to pressure them.

SSP Varun Sharma stated that police are investigating all angles, including the financial distress detailed in the suicide note. Police are tracing the alleged transactions and examining the digital evidence provided by Chahal.

Chahal was also one of the accused in the 2015 police firing case related to anti-sacrilege protests in Faridkot district of Punjab.
