India Concerned: Hindu Statue Demolished Amid Thai-Cambodia Conflict, Fueling Religious Sentiments and Escalating Border Tensions.

Amid ongoing tensions at the Thai-Cambodia border, India has voiced its concern over the reported demolition of a statue of a Hindu deity. The incident, which allegedly occurred on Monday following weeks of military clashes, has prompted a response from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), expressing that such actions are "disrespectful" and "hurt the sentiments of followers around the world".

The MEA spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, addressed the media on Wednesday, stating that the ministry had taken note of reports concerning the demolition of a recently erected statue of a Hindu deity. The statue was located in an area affected by the continuing border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia. Jaiswal emphasized the deep reverence for Hindu and Buddhist deities across the region, highlighting them as integral to the shared civilizational heritage.

"Hindu and Buddhist deities are deeply revered and worshipped by people across the region, as part of our shared civilizational heritage," Jaiswal stated. "Notwithstanding territorial claims, such disrespectful acts hurt the sentiments of followers around the world, and should not take place".

India has urged both Thailand and Cambodia to de-escalate tensions and return to diplomatic channels to resolve the ongoing conflict. "We once again urge the two sides to return to dialogue and diplomacy, to resume peace and avoid any further loss of lives, and damage to property and heritage," the MEA spokesperson added.

The statue in question is reportedly of Lord Vishnu and was constructed in 2014. Videos circulating on social media depict the demolition, allegedly carried out by the Thai military using a bulldozer. These images have triggered outrage across social media platforms, with many users expressing strong condemnation.

Cambodia has also criticized Thailand regarding the demolition, asserting that the statue was located within Cambodian territory. Kim Chanpanha, a spokesman in the border province of Preah Vihear, told AFP that the statue was "inside our territory".

The renewed clashes between Thailand and Cambodia stem from a long-standing territorial dispute, with tensions escalating in recent months. The current conflict reportedly began in July 2025, resulting in casualties and the displacement of a large number of civilians. Recent reports indicate that military officials from both countries have commenced discussions aimed at restoring a ceasefire.
