Arshad Warsi, known for his role as Circuit in the beloved "Munna Bhai" film series, has shed light on why the third installment, "Munna Bhai Chale America," never materialized. According to Warsi, the film's concept bore too many similarities to a Shah Rukh Khan movie, leading to the project being shelved.
Following the success of "Munna Bhai M.B.B.S." (2003) and "Lage Raho Munna Bhai" (2006), fans eagerly anticipated the next chapter in the comical adventures of Munna Bhai (Sanjay Dutt) and his loyal sidekick Circuit. "Munna Bhai Chale America" was planned as the third film, with a trailer even being shot. The film was set to be directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the same team behind the first two successful movies.
The plot of "Munna Bhai Chale America" revolved around Munna and Circuit's journey to America, where they would face challenges with the English language and immigration. A trailer was released showing the duo comically attempting to learn English. However, the film never made it past the pre-production stage.
Arshad Warsi revealed that the storyline of "My Name Is Khan" (2010), which features Shah Rukh Khan, was too similar to the planned plot of "Munna Bhai Chale America". This overlap prompted the makers to drop the project. According to one account, the story involved Circuit falling in love with a girl, but their marriage is threatened when her father discovers Circuit's Muslim background. Munna then embarks on a mission to change the perception of Muslims in America, even intending to convince the US President that they are not terrorists. Rajkumar Hirani clarified that the film was about Munna and Circuit being upset with an anti-Muslim statement made by George Bush and deciding to go to America to bring him back to India. To do so, they would need to learn English.
Despite the cancellation of "Munna Bhai Chale America," Arshad Warsi believes the script is still relevant and better than many films today.
While "Munna Bhai Chale America" was shelved, there have been discussions about reviving the "Munna Bhai" series. However, director Rajkumar Hirani, known for his perfectionism, has been hesitant to move forward until he is completely satisfied with the script. Warsi has stated that Hirani has multiple brilliant scripts but is waiting to iron out some glitches before commencing production. There were also reports of a fallout between Hirani and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, further complicating the possibility of a third film.
The "Munna Bhai" series remains a fan favorite, with audiences eagerly awaiting a potential third installment. While the journey to America may have been cancelled, the hope for another "Munna Bhai" film lives on.
