Bollywood is abuzz with reactions to Aditya Dhar's latest spy thriller, "Dhurandhar," which was released on December 5, 2025. The film, featuring Ranveer Singh in the lead role, has garnered widespread acclaim from both audiences and industry insiders. Among those singing praises is filmmaker Karan Johar, who has expressed that "Dhurandhar" made him question his own abilities as a filmmaker.
Johar, known for his contributions to Bollywood as a director and producer, admitted that the film opened his eyes to new creative possibilities. During Anupama Chopra's book launch event for "Dining With the Stars," Johar shared his reaction to watching "Dhurandhar," stating he was "blown away". He lauded the film's seamless storytelling and the director's focus on narrative over self-conscious displays of technique.
"I was like, blown away by Dhurandhar, it makes you feel like, oh my craft is limited," Johar confessed. He specifically noted the effective use of background music and the director's ability to prioritize the story. Johar felt that Aditya Dhar wasn't trying to show off his skills but was seamlessly telling the story.
Johar further reflected on how "Dhurandhar" has inspired him to re-evaluate his approach to filmmaking. "It made me question my ability as a filmmaker, and that's always a good thing for me," he said.
"Dhurandhar," directed, written, and co-produced by Aditya Dhar, is a spy action thriller reportedly inspired by real-life covert operations linked to India's Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). Ranveer Singh stars as Hamza Ali Mazari, who infiltrates a cartel gang. The film boasts an ensemble cast including Akshaye Khanna, R. Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, and Sara Arjun.
The film's narrative is set in Lyari, Pakistan, and has resonated with viewers because of its geopolitical intrigue. Deepika Padukone called the 3 hour and 34 minute film worth every minute.
Karan Johar also took to Instagram to share his thoughts on "Dhurandhar", calling Ranveer Singh's performance his favorite to date. He wrote, "OUTSTANDING!!! So much respect for Aditya Dhar, Ranveer Singh, Sashwat Sachdeva (my favourite @ranveersingh performance)". He also congratulated the entire cast and crew and Jio Studios.
Other Bollywood personalities, including Akshay Kumar, have also praised the film. Akshay Kumar shared that he was blown away after watching "Dhurandhar". He lauded Aditya Dhar for his gripping tale and expressed his happiness that audiences are giving the film the love it deserves.
With positive reviews and audience reception, "Dhurandhar" is expected to continue its successful run at the box office. A sequel is planned to be released on March 19, 2026.
