Denton, TX – In a stunning turn of events, North Texas Mean Green star quarterback Drew Mestemaker has announced his intention to enter the NCAA transfer portal. The announcement, made Monday via his X account, sends shockwaves through the Mean Green program and the wider college football landscape.
Mestemaker, a redshirt freshman, is coming off a sensational season in which he led the FBS in passing yards with 4,379 and tossed 34 touchdowns. His performance earned him numerous accolades, including American Conference Offensive Player of the Year and the Burlsworth Trophy, awarded to the nation's most outstanding player who began his career as a walk-on.
"After much thought and prayer, I've made the decision to enter my name into the transfer portal," Mestemaker stated. "This was not an easy choice. My time at North Texas has meant more to me than I can ever fully express. North Texas was the only school that believed in me enough to give me an opportunity as a walk-on when others didn't, and for that, this place will always hold a special place in my heart".
Mestemaker's rise to stardom is a remarkable story. The Austin, Texas native didn't start at quarterback in high school until his freshman year, later playing safety and serving as an all-district punter at Vandegrift High School. He initially joined North Texas as a walk-on. Following Chandler Morris's transfer to Virginia last December, Mestemaker seized the opportunity to start in the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl against Texas State in January. He made the most of it, racking up 448 total yards and three touchdowns in his first college start.
This season, Mestemaker built on that debut, thriving in former Mean Green coach Eric Morris's offensive system. He accounted for 4,468 total yards over 14 games and broke the school's single-game record with 608 passing yards against Charlotte on October 24. That performance also set a new single-game passing yardage record for the American Conference.
The timing of Mestemaker's decision coincides with significant changes within the North Texas program. Oklahoma State hired Eric Morris as its next head coach on November 25, leading to a wave of players entering the transfer portal. All-America running back Caleb Hawkins and star wide receiver Wyatt Young have already announced their departures.
Mestemaker is expected to be one of the most sought-after quarterbacks in the transfer portal. He has three years of eligibility remaining and a proven track record of success at the college level. Several programs are already rumored to be interested, including Oklahoma State, Indiana, and Texas Tech.
Oklahoma State presents a natural landing spot, given Mestemaker's familiarity with Eric Morris's offensive scheme. Indiana is also reportedly showing "significant interest," while Texas Tech could offer Mestemaker an opportunity to step in as an immediate starter.
North Texas concluded the season with a 12-2 record, including a 49-47 victory over San Diego State in the Isleta New Mexico Bowl. Despite the bowl win, the loss of Mestemaker, Hawkins, and Young leaves the Mean Green with significant holes to fill as they transition into a new era under newly appointed head coach Neal Brown.
