In Uttar Pradesh, approximately 170 sheep have died under mysterious circumstances near Rashtriya Prerna Sthal in Lucknow. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered a probe into the incident.
The sheep deaths occurred days after an event was held at the site. Charu Khare, the founder of Aasra The Helping Hands Trust, an NGO, submitted an application to the Madiaon police station, reporting the incident. Khare stated that it was unclear whether the sheep died after consuming waste material or if they were intentionally poisoned. She has called for a thorough investigation and post-mortem examinations to determine the cause of death.
Shivanand Mishra, the Madiaon SHO (Station House Officer), confirmed that samples have been sent for post-mortem examination. The Uttar Pradesh government has released a statement announcing a compensation of ₹10,000 per sheep.
Local NGOs have filed a police complaint alleging negligence against the municipal corporation and event organizers for failing to clean the venue. They believe this negligence led to an environmental and economic disaster.
Conflicting reports exist regarding the exact number of sheep that have died. While Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Suresh Kumar has officially confirmed 71 deaths, shepherds claim the actual number is around 170. A medical team of 30 doctors is currently treating the surviving livestock.
This incident raises concerns about animal cruelty and potential negligence. Authorities are considering factors such as disease, poisoning, or negligence as potential causes. The investigation aims to determine the precise cause of the sheep deaths and to hold those responsible accountable.
