Germany will remain in the top pool of the World Junior Championship next year after defeating Denmark 8-4 in the relegation game. The loss relegates Denmark to Division I-A. The game took place on Friday afternoon.
Germany started the game strong, with David Lewandowski scoring the first goal at 3:37 of the first period. Maxim Schafer increased Germany's lead to 2-0 on a power play goal about three and a half minutes later. Mads Klyvo scored for Denmark with under three minutes left in the first, cutting the lead to 2-1.
In the second period, Manuel Schams and Simon Seidl scored two minutes apart to give Germany a 4-1 lead. Klyvo scored again for Denmark, and Oliver Green brought the Danes within one goal, making the score 4-3.
Germany once again came out strong in the third period with Dustin Willhoft scoring at 5:04, making it 5-3. Schams scored his second goal of the game at 10:04, increasing Germany's lead to 6-3. Anton Linde scored for Denmark at 11:21, but Lenny Boos answered for Germany just over a minute later, making it 7-4. Tobias Schwarz then sealed the victory with an empty-net goal, resulting in the final score of 8-4.
Manuel Schams, who scored two goals, said that the team's main goal after not making the playoffs was to win the game. He added that he felt the team grew together throughout the tournament and that they wanted the win a little more. Mads Klyvo, who also scored twice for Denmark, said that giving up eight goals made it hard to win and that the team took too many penalties. He promised that Denmark would do everything to win next year and return to the top pool.
Germany has remained in the top tournament since 2020, qualifying for the quarterfinal three times. Germany can bring back 11 players in 2027, while Denmark can bring back 13. Norway will be returning to the top event in Sweden for the first time since their relegation in 2024.
