Veteran actor Shakti Kapoor recently recounted a memorable incident that led to him being cast in the iconic 1980 film Qurbani. In a recent interview, Kapoor shared the story of how a car accident with Feroz Khan ultimately changed his life and career.
Before Qurbani, Kapoor was a struggling actor in Mumbai, facing financial difficulties and struggling to find significant roles. He managed to purchase a second-hand Fiat for Rs 13,000 after earning money from an advertisement. Kapoor was very fond of cars, but he barely had enough money for fuel. One day, while driving his Fiat on Linking Road in Bandra, a Mercedes attempted to overtake him and ended up hitting his car. The impact pushed Kapoor's Fiat into a corner.
Enraged by the accident and worried about the damage to his already fragile vehicle, Kapoor got out of his car, ready to confront the other driver. "I was furious, I didn't even have money for food, let alone to fix this car,” Kapoor admitted. However, his anger quickly dissipated when he realized that the driver of the Mercedes was none other than the renowned actor and filmmaker Feroz Khan.
Kapoor recalls that Feroz Khan was a tall man. Instead of lashing out, Kapoor saw an opportunity and expressed his desire to work in films. Khan, seemingly unfazed, inquired about the damage to Kapoor's car and then left, leaving Kapoor amidst onlookers.
Later that day, Kapoor visited writer KK Shukla and told him about the incident. Shukla, in turn, told Kapoor about a film role for a villain that he thought Kapoor would be perfect for. The director was set on casting someone who could instill fear, just like Kapoor did when he confronted Khan. Kapoor then revealed that he was the man who had the accident with Khan. Shukla then called Khan, informing him that the man from the accident was with him.
Feroz Khan was initially scared and thought Kapoor would hit him after the collision. However, the accident gave Khan the idea to cast Kapoor as the villain in Qurbani. According to Kapoor, Khan said he wanted a villain like him. Kapoor believes his "unfiltered plea" and the accident itself left an impression on Khan.
Kapoor was cast in Qurbani, which proved to be a turning point in his career. Kapoor played the role of Vikram Singh in the film. Qurbani not only solidified Kapoor's place in Bollywood but also gave the industry one of its most memorable villains. Kapoor himself acknowledges the pivotal role Qurbani played in his success, stating that the film "completely changed my life".
