Neha Dhupia, known for her roles in recent shows like Single Papa and Perfect Family, recently shared her thoughts on the insecurities and anxieties that come with the unpredictable nature of the film industry. In a recent interview, Dhupia openly discussed her feelings of anxiety during periods without acting jobs, revealing a vulnerability that resonates with many in the entertainment world.
Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Neha Dhupia confessed, "I do get anxiety when I'm not working". Despite having two decades of experience in the industry, she admitted to moments of despair, sharing, "Even after 20 years in the industry, when the lights are out, I do put my head into a pillow and cry. I did it three days ago. Do I have my reasons? Yes, Is anybody listening? I don't know. I don't want to make a sob story about this because I love the business of movies. I feel it won't let me down".
Dhupia highlighted the difficulties of navigating the constant judgment and potential project losses that are common in the industry. "It gets very tough. It is advocated to be thick-skinned, but everything matters. The part that matters the most is that when you are not working, everybody around you is working. You see life pass by," she explained. She emphasized that experience helps in coping with these anxieties, stating, "The only difference between me and a newcomer is that I know how to get past these things, I have been anxious so many times".
The actress also touched upon the sporadic nature of acting opportunities, admitting, "I get so tired when there is no acting jobs for 3-4 years but by the grace of God, I am never out of work because I do so many things. It is an exhausting but rewarding business". She also mentioned that she has received numerous offers from the South film industry, but she couldn't recall the last time she was offered a role in Hindi films.
Neha Dhupia drew inspiration from Akshaye Khanna's career, who is known for his selective approach to projects. "The conversion has to be there. If my work in the latest two shows doesn't convert into anything than there is no point. Does work lead to good work? I don't know sometimes… then you see trajectory of Akshaye Khanna and then you think, Hum bhi 6 saal ghar hi baith jate hain (We should also sit at home for 6 years). It is just hoping that work will lead to work," she said. Akshaye Khanna has had back-to-back hits this year with Chhaava and Dhurandhar.
Dhupia's sentiments echo the experiences of many actors who face periods of unemployment and uncertainty in the entertainment industry. Actress Ratna Pathak Shah revealed that she had been unemployed for a year, attributing it to her lack of presence on social media. Similarly, Sushmita Sen admitted to being out of work for eight years and actively seeking opportunities. Neha Dhupia believes there's no shame in seeking opportunities and asking for work.
Neha Dhupia has previously spoken about the challenges of balancing work and personal life, particularly the "mom guilt" experienced by working mothers. She has also addressed the issue of trolls and negativity on social media. In December 2025, Dhupia and her husband, Angad Bedi, were noted for their understated elegance at a wedding, showcasing a "low-key" style.
