Lookman's brilliance propels Nigeria past Mozambique and into the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals.

Ademola Lookman was the star of the show as Nigeria convincingly defeated Mozambique 4-0 to secure their spot in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-finals. The Super Eagles dominated the match, showcasing their attacking prowess and booking their place in the last eight.

Nigeria, runners-up in 2024, took a significant step towards their first AFCON title since 2013 by ending Mozambique's historic run in the tournament. The Mambas were making their debut in the AFCON knockout stages, but they were no match for the Super Eagles, who have now won their opening four matches at this year's tournament.

Victor Osimhen had an early goal disallowed for offside, but Nigeria maintained relentless pressure. Ademola Lookman finally broke the deadlock in the 20th minute, finding the top corner with a clinical finish from inside the area. It was Lookman's third goal of the tournament. Five minutes later, Nigeria doubled their advantage when Lookman's cross was cleverly deflected by Akor Adams, allowing Osimhen to tap into an empty net.

Nigeria continued their dominance after the break. In the 47th minute, Lookman turned provider once again, setting up Osimhen for his second goal of the match. Osimhen duly converted the chance at the back post. Akor Adams then capped off the scoring in the 75th minute, blasting a shot past the Mozambique goalkeeper after being teed up by Lookman.

Nigeria's dominant performance was reflected in the match statistics, with the Super Eagles creating numerous chances and controlling possession. Lookman was particularly influential, creating a match-high six chances and recording the joint-most touches in the box.

The Super Eagles will now face either Algeria or DR Congo in the quarter-finals. Nigeria will be looking to continue their impressive form as they aim for their fourth continental title. Meanwhile, Mozambique's debut appearance in the knockout stage comes to an end.
