Mamata Accuses Election Commission of Illegality, Citing BJP App Use in Special Intensive Revision.

Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, has made a fresh allegation against the Election Commission (EC), accusing it of using mobile applications developed by the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) IT cell for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state. Banerjee leveled the charges while speaking to reporters on Tuesday. She also said that the SIR exercise is being conducted in an "illegal, unconstitutional, and undemocratic" manner.

Banerjee, who recently concluded a two-day visit to Sagar Island, overseeing preparations for the upcoming Gangasagar Mela, accused the EC of resorting to wrong moves while conducting the electoral roll revision. She claimed that the EC is marking eligible voters as 'dead' and forcing elderly and unwell individuals to attend hearings.

Banerjee has expressed her intent to pursue legal action regarding the matter as a citizen. She warned that the SIR was being used as a political tool to disenfranchise voters. She also stated that she would approach the Supreme Court, if necessary, to present the ground realities of alleged harassment and irregularities linked to the SIR process.

The Chief Minister's accusations follow an escalation of her criticism of the EC. On Monday, she announced that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) would seek legal recourse against the SIR, alleging that the process was being carried out without adequate preparation, leading to widespread harassment of ordinary citizens. The TMC has already approached the Supreme Court, claiming that the EC has taken recourse to "arbitrary and procedurally irregular actions" for conducting the SIR.

Banerjee also claimed that the SIR exercise had created fear among voters and that several people had died due to panic. She alleged that some deaths occurred while people were standing in queues for SIR-related hearings, and accused the EC and the BJP of subjecting elderly and ailing citizens to undue hardship in the name of verification. Furthermore, Banerjee alleged large-scale arbitrary deletion of names from the voter rolls, claiming that around 5.4 million names had been removed despite voters having the right to submit Forms 7 and 8. She accused the BJP of influencing the exercise and alleged that people's voting rights were being taken away under the guise of administrative revision.

Banerjee urged people to remain careful while participating in the SIR and to support those who need help. She had previously stated that the ongoing situation is a fight for existence and that the party is seeking legal help due to the inhumane treatment and deaths allegedly caused by the SIR.
