India's quality focus: Achieving developed nation status by 2047 through superior products and services.

India's ambition to achieve developed nation status by 2047 hinges significantly on its ability to elevate the quality of its products and services, according to Sanjay Garg, Director General of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Speaking on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, during the 79th foundation day of BIS, Garg emphasized that quality is the key differentiator between developed and developing nations.

Garg asserted that India can't afford to overlook quality standards if it genuinely aspires to become a 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India) by 2047. He pointed out that the disparities in infrastructure, governance, and services are readily apparent when comparing developed and developing countries. Since its inception, BIS has been working to ensure that every Indian citizen has access to safe, reliable, and quality products. The organization is dedicated to assisting industries in meeting these quality objectives.

Highlighting BIS's efforts, Garg mentioned the progress in gold jewellery hallmarking, which is now mandatory in 373 districts. Impressively, over 58 crore gold jewellery pieces have been hallmarked to date, with a monthly processing rate exceeding one crore pieces. He also noted the voluntary introduction of silver hallmarking, driven by industry demand for mandatory implementation. Since September 1, 2025, a Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID)-based system for silver jewellery has been introduced on a voluntary basis to assure consumers of the metal's purity. Already, more than 23 lakh silver articles have been hallmarked under this system.

While silver hallmarking is currently voluntary, Garg acknowledged the growing industry demand for making it mandatory. However, he clarified that BIS would consider this step only after the necessary infrastructure is in place. This cautious approach ensures a smooth transition and effective implementation of quality standards for silver jewellery.

The emphasis on quality aligns with the broader vision of creating a quality-first culture across the nation, as highlighted during World Standards Day 2025. A strong quality infrastructure is considered essential for accelerating industrial growth, enhancing the global competitiveness of MSMEs (Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises), and safeguarding consumer interests. BIS's proactive efforts, including Standards Clubs and consumer outreach initiatives, are laying the groundwork for this cultural shift. By prioritizing quality and standardization, India can confidently stride towards its goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
