Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged Indian AI startups to develop Large Language Models (LLMs) that contribute to the global good, emphasizing the importance of ethical, unbiased, and transparent AI development anchored in data privacy principles. During a roundtable discussion on Thursday with 12 leading Indian AI startups, Modi highlighted the potential of AI to transform society and positioned the startups as co-architects of India's future.
The Prime Minister called for promoting affordable and inclusive AI, alongside frugal innovation, and suggested that India should present a unique AI model to the world that reflects the spirit of "Made in India, Made for the World". He also emphasized the need to ensure that Indian AI models promote local and indigenous content, including regional languages, to ensure inclusivity and accessibility.
The 12 AI startups that participated in the meeting have qualified for the 'AI for ALL: Global Impact Challenge' at the upcoming India AI Impact Summit 2026 in February. These startups are working in diverse areas such as Indian language foundation models, multilingual LLMs, speech-to-text, text-to-audio and text-to-video technologies, 3D content using generative AI for e-commerce and marketing, engineering simulations, material research, advanced analytics for data-driven decision-making, and healthcare diagnostics.
Founders and innovators who attended the meeting expressed deep inspiration from the Prime Minister's vision, which reaffirmed India's ambition to emerge as a global leader in AI. They also lauded Modi's deep understanding of technology, India's unique challenges, and the ethical responsibilities that come with AI leadership. The Prime Minister's insights, including anecdotes from his personal life, left a strong impression on the attendees.
The India AI Impact Summit 2026, scheduled to be held in India next month, is being positioned as the first global AI summit hosted in the Global South. The summit aims to highlight India's efforts to leverage AI for societal transformation and to promote the country's role in the technology sector.
The Prime Minister also underscored the importance of widespread AI adoption and ethical leadership, emphasizing that India needs to solve its unique challenges to become the "Vishwaguru" of AI. He assured the startups of the government's full support for the development and deployment of their AI models and encouraged them to aim for global leadership from India.
The IndiaAI Mission comprises seven pillars, including the foundation models initiative, subsidized access to high-end GPUs, app development for India-specific use cases, a national AI dataset platform (AIKosh), AI-focused skilling programs, accelerated funding for AI-native startups, and promoting responsible AI adoption through robust governance frameworks.
