Purulia, West Bengal – A tense situation unfolded in West Bengal's Purulia district on Saturday, January 10, 2026, as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari staged a dharna (sit-in protest) inside the Chandrakona Police Station. The protest followed an alleged attack on his convoy while he was returning from Purulia to Paschim Medinipur. Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, has accused Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers of orchestrating the attack.
Adhikari claims the attack occurred in plain sight of law enforcement, highlighting what he describes as a culture of violence and impunity under the Mamata Banerjee administration. According to a statement released by Adhikari's office, "The very guardians of law stood by like mute spectators. This is not just an attack on me; it's an assault on every voice of opposition in West Bengal".
The BJP leader has vowed to continue his dharna until those responsible for the attack are apprehended. "I am now sitting on a dharna inside the Chandrakona Police Station, demanding immediate action and arrests. The people of Bengal deserve better than this lawless dictatorship. I will not budge until accountability is enforced," Adhikari asserted.
This is not the first time Adhikari has reported attacks on his convoy. In August 2025, he alleged a similar incident involving TMC workers during a visit to Cooch Behar, where he was met with black flags and slogans. Then, in October 2025, Adhikari claimed that "illegal Bangladeshi Muslims" attacked his convoy in South 24 Parganas district while en route to a Kali Puja and Diwali event. He accused TMC leader Rekha Gazi of orchestrating that attack.
The BJP has consistently criticized the TMC for these attacks, demanding strict action against those involved. However, the TMC has denied any involvement in the attacks, sometimes suggesting they are the result of internal disputes within the BJP. In the Cooch Behar incident, the TMC alleged that the attack was a "well-scripted drama" by the BJP.
The repeated attacks on Adhikari's convoy underscore the ongoing political tensions and violence in West Bengal. Adhikari's protest at the police station reflects the BJP's growing frustration with the state's law and order situation and its determination to hold the TMC government accountable. The situation remains tense as Adhikari continues his dharna, demanding justice and alleging a "lawless dictatorship" in the state.
