Lucknow doctor arrested after rape and forced conversion accusations surface, igniting legal and social concerns.

Lucknow police have arrested Dr. Ramizuddin Nayak, a resident doctor at King George's Medical University (KGMU), who was wanted in connection with allegations of rape, forced abortion, and religious conversion. The arrest occurred near the City Station gate in Lucknow on Friday, January 9, 2026, after he had been absconding for 17 days. A reward of ₹50,000 had been announced for information leading to his arrest.

The case against Dr. Nayak was registered on December 23, 2025, at the Chowk police station, based on a complaint filed by a junior female medical student at KGMU. The complainant alleged that Dr. Nayak established a physical relationship with her under the false promise of marriage. She further accused him of forcing her to undergo an abortion without her consent and pressuring her to convert to Islam.

The charges against Dr. Nayak include offenses under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021. These encompass sexual intercourse by deceitful means, causing miscarriage without consent, criminal intimidation, and unlawful religious conversion.

Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna stated that a non-bailable warrant had been issued against Dr. Nayak. Police conducted raids across four states in search of him before his eventual arrest in the Thakurganj area of Lucknow. Authorities had also pasted attachment notices at his residences in Uttarakhand and Lucknow.

Prior to Dr. Nayak's arrest, his parents, Salimuddin and Khateja, were also arrested in connection with the case. They face allegations of coercing women into religious conversion. Police investigations revealed that another woman, a doctor from Agra Medical College, had come forward, claiming that she was forced to convert to marry Dr. Nayak. The KGMU complainant stated that the Agra doctor identified herself as Rameezuddin's wife and had converted for their marriage in February of the previous year. The KGMU doctor also alleged that she became pregnant in September of last year, and Dr. Nayak gave her abortion pills.

The medical university suspended Dr. Nayak following the initial complaint and an interim report by its internal committee addressing sexual harassment allegations. The victim in the case is a resident of West Bengal. Her father initially filed complaints on the Chief Minister's portal and with the Women's Commission. Following the registration of the case, Dr. Nayak remained absconding for 17 days, with speculation that he may have fled to Nepal. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
