The Assam Cabinet has approved the appointment of a special team of public prosecutors to handle the death case of Zubeen Garg, a revered cultural icon, who passed away in Singapore in September of the previous year. The decision, made on Friday, January 9, 2026, aims to ensure a strong and effective prosecution in the ongoing legal proceedings.
The appointed team comprises five legal experts. Ziaul Kamar, a senior advocate from Gauhati High Court, will serve as the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP). Supporting him will be Brojendra Mohan Choudhury as the Additional Special Public Prosecutor, and Kishore Datta, Pranjal Dutta, and Bikash Jamar as Assistant Special Public Prosecutors. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted that this team would effectively represent the government's stance in the trial.
This decision follows concerns raised by Zubeen Garg's wife, Garima, who, on February 3, expressed the need for an equally robust prosecution team, given the battery of lawyers representing the defendants. The Assam government's move underscores its commitment to ensuring justice for the celebrated artist.
In addition to the legal appointments, the Cabinet has also sanctioned ₹5 crore to the Zubeen Garg Memorial Trust. This grant aims to support the trust's efforts to preserve and promote Garg's songs and music, as well as to establish a museum in his name. The Zubeen Garg Trust was recently established by the artist's family to preserve his artistic legacy and continue his commitment to society, culture, and young talent.
Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19 while swimming in the sea during a yacht outing organized by the Assam Association in Singapore, where he was attending a cultural festival. Following his death, the Assam government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the CID to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death. A separate case is also lodged by the CID concerning financial irregularities allegedly committed by Garg's manager, Siddharth Sharma, and Shyamkanu Mahanta, the organizer of the Singapore festival.
Several individuals who were present in Singapore at the time of the incident have been arrested and charged with his murder. These include Shyamkanu and Siddhartha, along with two of Garg's bandmates, Shekharjyoti Goswami and co-singer Amrit Prabha Mahanta, as well as Garg's cousin and Assam Police DSP Sandipan Garg.
The Assam Cabinet also expressed gratitude to the Central Government for the Kaziranga elevated corridor, the foundation of which will be laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 18, 2026. Furthermore, the Cabinet approved the settlement of land in favor of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha for the construction of a multipurpose project aimed at promoting and preserving Bodo language, literature, and cultural heritage.
