AAP Condemns BJP's Derogatory Posters Targeting Atishi: A Question of Respect for Women in Politics?

In the latest chapter of the ongoing political feud in Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has strongly condemned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over a series of posters that target AAP leader Atishi. The controversy stems from accusations that Atishi used "insensitive words" against Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur during a recent Delhi Assembly winter session debate, sparking a fierce response from the BJP.

The BJP has accused Atishi, who also serves as the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi assembly, of disrespecting Guru Tegh Bahadur. This allegation led to BJP MLAs staging protests within the Assembly, demanding an apology from Atishi and even calling for the cancellation of her Assembly membership. The situation escalated to the point where Assembly proceedings were disrupted and adjourned multiple times.

In response, the AAP has vehemently defended Atishi, accusing the BJP of circulating a doctored video to falsely attribute disrespectful remarks to her. AAP leaders claim that the BJP has manipulated the video, inserting words that Atishi never spoke, to create a controversy and incite religious sentiments. A forensic report, dated January 9, 2026, has emerged, supporting AAP's claims, stating that the word "Guru" was not spoken by Atishi in the original audio. The report further suggests that the video was deliberately doctored to include captions with words Atishi never uttered.

The AAP has accused the BJP of attempting to exploit the situation for political gain. AAP leaders have alleged that the BJP is deliberately dragging the name of Guru Tegh Bahadur into a petty political controversy. Following the circulation of the allegedly doctored video, AAP workers staged protests outside the BJP headquarters in New Delhi.

Adding fuel to the fire, BJP leader Kapil Mishra has accused the AAP of silencing Atishi and demanded that AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal publicly ask her to apologize. Mishra also criticized Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, alleging misuse of state machinery to divert attention from the issue. The BJP has amplified its criticism through posters questioning Atishi’s whereabouts, further intensifying the political battle.

The AAP, in turn, has filed a complaint with Delhi’s Chief Electoral Officer regarding what it describes as "objectionable" posters and hoardings put up across Delhi by the BJP, some featuring photos of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. AAP's legal team had previously filed a complaint about the hoardings six days prior, but the party claims no action has been taken. AAP leaders express concern over a perceived lack of a level playing field, particularly with the arrest of a sitting Chief Minister and the freezing of a major opposition party's bank account.

This poster war is only the latest skirmish between the AAP and BJP in Delhi. The BJP has previously targeted the AAP government with posters accusing it of corruption and misgovernance, while the AAP has accused the BJP of opposing welfare schemes. As the political temperature rises, both parties appear locked in a bitter battle for public opinion.
