Kolkata, January 14, 2026 – West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has made a symbolic yet significant change in his official correspondence, replacing the conventional sign-off "Yours sincerely" with "Vande Mataram". The announcement, made on Wednesday, underscores the Governor's deep reverence for the iconic national song.
The decision was communicated through the Lok Bhavan's official X handle, where it was explained that the move draws inspiration from the enduring legacy and cultural importance of "Vande Mataram," a composition by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay.
An official statement quoted the Governor urging everyone to embrace "Vande Mataram" in their daily lives as a mark of respect for Rishi Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay's timeless creation. The national song, according to the West Bengal Governor, embodies the spirit of the nation and continues to inspire generations. He believes that such gestures will help preserve the values of unity, patriotism, and cultural pride associated with the song.
The Governor’s decision has been described as more than a mere symbolic gesture. It is viewed as a call to embrace the values associated with the national song. "Vande Mataram," which translates to "I bow to thee, Mother," is not just a song but a feeling, uniting people with the spirit of the nation, according to the Governor.
CV Ananda Bose had resumed his duties at the Raj Bhavan on May 29, 2025, after a month-long absence due to health reasons. Prior to this, he had dismissed speculations about his possible removal from his position, affirming his commitment to restoring the state's "lost reputation" and eradicating violence. He had also mentioned plans to visit villages to foster harmony among communities.
