Amidst Rising Tensions: India Urges Citizens in Iran to Expedite Departure Using All Available Options

New Delhi has urgently advised Indian nationals in Iran to leave the country as soon as possible, citing the increasingly unstable security situation. The advisory, issued by the Indian Embassy in Tehran on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, applies to all Indian citizens currently in Iran, including students, pilgrims, businesspersons, and tourists. They are urged to depart using any available means of transport, including commercial flights.

This directive follows an earlier advisory issued on January 5, 2026, which cautioned Indian citizens in Iran to exercise caution and avoid areas of protests or demonstrations. The recent escalation in tensions and ongoing unrest within Iran have prompted the government to strengthen its recommendation. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has also strongly advised against any travel to Iran until further notice.

The advisory comes amidst escalating regional tensions stemming from the Iranian government's crackdown on widespread protests, which have reportedly resulted in a significant number of fatalities. There are also fears of potential intervention by the United States. Reports suggest that over 2,500 people have died in the crackdown following protests that began in late December over economic grievances.

Approximately 10,000 Indian citizens currently reside in Iran, many of whom are students. Thousands of Shia pilgrims from India also visit Iran annually. The Indian Embassy has urged all Indian nationals and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to exercise heightened caution, steer clear of protest areas, remain in close contact with the embassy, and closely monitor local media for updates. Nationals have been asked to keep their travel and immigration documents, including passports and identity cards, readily accessible.

The Indian Embassy in Tehran has provided helpline numbers and an official email address to facilitate emergency support. Indian nationals who have not yet registered with the Embassy are requested to do so via the Ministry of External Affairs' online registration portal. Recognizing potential internet disruptions within Iran, the advisory suggests that families of Indian nationals in India complete the registration on their behalf if necessary.

While there has been no official announcement regarding immediate evacuation plans, authorities are reportedly preparing for all possible scenarios given the fluid situation. The Indian government is closely monitoring the situation and taking measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens in Iran.
