The Sui blockchain network experienced a significant outage on January 14, 2026, that halted transactions for approximately six hours. The issue, described as a "network stall," impacted decentralized applications (dApps) on the network, including Slush and SuiScan, causing delays and processing failures.
The Sui team confirmed the network stall and stated they were actively working on a solution. According to explorer data, the network experienced downtime for over two hours, with no new blocks being produced. The last validated checkpoint, numbered 234608191, was registered at 2:22 p.m. UTC. A checkpoint on Sui provides a canonical ordering of transactions, similar to a block in other blockchains, and is crucial for node synchronization and transaction finalization.
Sui contributors deployed a fix, and the network was back online and fully operational after six hours. The Sui Foundation announced the restoration of normal operations and advised users to refresh their apps or browser windows if they were still experiencing issues.
This outage marks the second major disruption for the Sui network, with the first occurring in November 2024 due to a bug in congestion control code. The November 2024 outage lasted for over two and a half hours. In December 2025, the network also experienced degraded consensus with higher latencies.
Despite the outage, the price of SUI, the network's native token, remained relatively stable, trading flat around $1.89. While the broader crypto market saw gains, with Bitcoin reaching new highs, SUI's price action was largely unaffected.
The incident highlights the operational risks inherent in blockchain networks, even those considered well-established. The Coincu team suggests that ongoing protocol improvements and validator coordination are essential for enhancing the chain's robustness and ensuring consistent transaction throughput. These improvements are considered critical for maintaining developer interest, user experience, and token holder confidence.
Users were advised to avoid initiating transactions during the outage and to monitor the official Sui status page for updates. The Sui team continues to investigate the root cause of the stall to prevent future occurrences.
