Union Berlin snatches draw against Augsburg after fan demonstration halts Bundesliga match: A dramatic comeback.

Union Berlin salvaged a 1-1 draw against Augsburg in a Bundesliga match on Thursday that was temporarily halted due to fan protests against the league's scheduling. Marin Ljubicic's late goal secured the point for Union, who were also down to 10 men.

The game was disrupted in the first half when fans threw toy balls and other objects onto the field to protest the Bundesliga's scheduling of games. The interruption lasted for five minutes, starting in the 32nd minute when objects rained down after the ball went out of play behind Augsburg's goal. Players, substitutes, and staff members joined in to clear the field before play could resume in the 37th minute.

Augsburg took the lead just before halftime with an impressive long-range strike from Alexis Claude-Maurice. Claude-Maurice also hit the post in the second half, nearly extending Augsburg's lead. Union's hopes for a comeback appeared slim when Derrick Köhn was shown a red card in the 89th minute for a challenge on Samuel Essende.

Despite being a man down, Union Berlin found a late equalizer through Ljubicic, who flicked the ball into the net in stoppage time after Augsburg failed to clear their lines.

The fans displayed banners protesting the decision to hold a rare Thursday game and demanded more games be played during the traditional Saturday afternoon slot. Midweek games are less common in the Bundesliga compared to other major European leagues due to its structure of 18 teams and a 34-game season. The Thursday game was a result of the league's TV broadcast contract, which requires five different kickoff times for each round of games. This midweek round of games also included early and late games on Tuesday and Wednesday.
