On the 78th Army Day, marked on January 15, 2026, Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar joined Indian leaders in celebrating the "indomitable courage and sacrifice" of Indian soldiers. President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and CDS General Anil Chauhan were among the dignitaries who lauded the Indian Army's bravery and commitment to the nation.
The main Army Day parade, a spectacle of military prowess and tradition, was held in Jaipur, Rajasthan. This marked the fourth occasion the event has been held outside of Delhi, a move aimed at decentralizing the program and bringing the parade to different regions of the country. Notably, this was the first time the parade occurred in a non-cantonment area. The day commemorates Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa becoming the first Indian Commander-in-Chief in 1949.
President Murmu, as the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces, highlighted the Army's consistent upholding of professionalism, commitment, and bravery. She recognized their efforts in safeguarding the nation's borders and their role in saving lives during natural disasters. She also applauded the Army's success in Operation Sindoor.
Prime Minister Modi saluted the Indian Army's courage and unwavering dedication. In a message on X, he stated that the soldiers embody selfless service, protecting the nation with steadfast resolve, often in challenging conditions. He further added that their sense of duty inspires confidence and gratitude throughout the country and paid respects to those who have sacrificed their lives in service.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also saluted the force's courage, sacrifices, and commitment to protecting the country's sovereignty and integrity. Speaking in Jaipur, Singh stated that Operation Sindoor showcased India's courage, strength, restraint, and national character amidst global uncertainties, securing its place in history.
Ambassador Azar's participation in the Army Day celebrations underscores the strategic partnership between India and Israel. In his message, Azar saluted the brave soldiers of the Indian Army and reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to work together on counter-terrorism, technology, and innovation to address shared security threats. He emphasized that the cooperation between India and Israel is built on trust, courage, and a shared commitment to safety and stability.
This year's Army Day also served as a moment to reflect on the historical contributions of Indian soldiers. The Indian Army commemorates September 23 as 'Haifa Day' every year, paying respects to the Indian Cavalry Regiments that liberated the city of Haifa during World War I.
