Prime Minister Narendra Modi is celebrating the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) strong performance in recent municipal corporation elections, particularly highlighting the party's gains in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Modi has described the election results as a reflection of the public's faith in the BJP's development-oriented policies and a strengthening bond between the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the people of Maharashtra.
Addressing gatherings in Guwahati, Assam, Modi simultaneously launched a sharp critique against the Indian National Congress, accusing the party of neglecting Assam's development and prioritizing political gains over the state's well-being. He asserted that Assam has emerged as one of the fastest-developing regions in the country under the BJP-led government.
BMC Victory Hailed as People's Mandate
The BJP's victory in the BMC elections is particularly significant, as the party has managed to wrest control of the corporation from the Shiv Sena, ending their decades-long dominance. The BJP won 89 seats, while its ally Shiv Sena secured 29 seats in the 227-member BMC. Modi attributed this victory and other wins in urban local body elections to the trust of young voters in the BJP's "development model". He stated that the BJP is winning in places where it was once considered impossible to gain support. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also welcomed the outcome, calling it a strong endorsement of transparent administration and accountable governance.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance's emphatic victory underscored the people's faith in the NDA's development-oriented policies. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis thanked voters for giving a grand victory to the BJP and claimed that "Maharashtra relies on PM Modi a lot".
PM Modi Attacks Congress in Assam
While celebrating the BMC win, PM Modi also used the opportunity to criticize the Congress party during a series of events in Guwahati. He accused Congress of being "allergic to Assam's growth and recognition" and alleged that the party had historically opposed key milestones in Assam's development. Modi claimed that Congress neglected Assam and the broader eastern region, prioritizing political gain over local development. He accused the party of pushing Assam towards violence and exploiting the challenges faced by the state for their own political benefits.
Modi highlighted the Bodo Peace Accord as a historic turning point that ended years of violence and unrest, paving the way for peace, education, and development. He contrasted this with what he described as Congress's approach of ensuring infiltration and instability. Modi lauded the efforts to reclaim encroached land from "lakhs of infiltrators," accusing Congress of encouraging illegal infiltration for vote-bank politics. He also accused the Congress of not giving due respect to the art and culture of the state, opposing recognition for cultural icons.
