Wife says government seeks dates, no NSA case merit against Sonam Wangchuk.

Gitanjali Angmo, wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, has asserted that the government is seeking postponements in the National Security Act (NSA) case against her husband because it lacks merit. In an interview with PTI, Angmo stated that the Solicitor General is repeatedly requesting "dates after dates" as they have come to realize the weakness of their case.

Wangchuk, a Magsaysay Award winner and educator, was detained on September 26 under the NSA, following protests in Ladakh demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status, which resulted in casualties and injuries. Angmo, who co-founded the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh, with Wangchuk, described the case as "open and shut". She has filed a habeas corpus petition challenging Wangchuk's detention and seeking his immediate release.

Angmo voiced strong concerns regarding the state of democracy in India, arguing that Wangchuk's arrest exemplifies the misuse of power to "illegally detain" individuals. She emphasized the broader implications of Wangchuk's detention, stating, "it's not just about Sonam Wangchuk as an individual, but about the state of democracy in this country, about the use of power for illegal detention of people who have been working for this country. If it can happen to Sonam, it can happen to anybody else". She also expressed disappointment over the muted response to Wangchuk's detention and urged for a "more collected and louder" voice against such actions.

According to Angmo, obtaining the detention order and meeting with Wangchuk required filing a habeas corpus petition in the Supreme Court, and even acquiring his handwritten notes proved challenging. These notes, prepared by Wangchuk regarding his detention, have been submitted to the Supreme Court as part of the legal documentation. Angmo contends that authorities have not adhered to the NSA's procedural requirements. She argues that Wangchuk should have already been released due to these "procedural lapses".

Angmo further claimed that the grounds for Wangchuk's detention are "stale" and rely on old videos. She pointed out that some of the FIRs used against him either don't name him or are outdated, with one dating back to August 2025 without any prior notice or inquiry. She also added that Wangchuk was denied the chance to make an effective representation because he did not get videos.

The detention has reportedly delayed new projects for their institutions.
