Sunjay Kapur's Mother Fights for Family Trust Cancellation: Legal Battle Over Legacy and Control.

Rani Kapur, the mother of the late businessman Sunjay Kapur, has filed a suit in the Delhi High Court seeking the cancellation of the Rani Kapur Family Trust. The suit marks a new development in the ongoing legal disputes surrounding the Kapur family's assets. The trust in question holds a stake in the automotive component manufacturer Sona Comstar, with its estimated valuation running into several thousand crore rupees.

In her petition, the 80-year-old Rani Kapur alleges that the trust was fraudulently established and used to divest her of her entire estate, including control over the Sona Group of companies. She claims that her daughter-in-law, Priya Kapur, Sunjay Kapur's widow, was the "chief mastermind" behind the alleged conspiracy. Rani Kapur is seeking declaratory and consequential relief, asserting that the RK Family Trust is null and void and should be cancelled. She also seeks to permanently restrain Priya Kapur from utilizing or acting in furtherance of the RK Family Trust in any manner and demands a rendition of accounts of the trust from its inception.

Rani Kapur claims that after she suffered a stroke in 2017, Sunjay Kapur and Priya Kapur exploited her physical dependence and trust. She alleges they orchestrated a scheme to transfer all her assets into the RK Family Trust without her informed consent. She claims she was repeatedly made to sign documents, including blank papers, under the guise of administrative convenience.

The suit outlines a "complex web of illegal transactions" allegedly carried out by Priya Kapur and other defendants in collusion with Sunjay Kapur. According to Rani Kapur, these transactions resulted in all her assets being vested in the allegedly fraudulent trust without her knowledge. She contends that the alleged fraud only came to light after Sunjay Kapur's death on June 12, 2025, which the suit describes as having occurred under mysterious circumstances, and the subsequent sequence of events.

Rani Kapur is claiming to be the matriarch of the 'Kapur Family', which consists of her two daughters, her late son, and her seven grandchildren. The ongoing dispute was raised by actor Karisma Kapoor's children seeking a share in their late father Sunjay Kapur's assets. The Supreme Court had previously asked Karisma Kapoor to file her objections to Priya Kapur's plea seeking details of her divorce proceedings with Sunjay Kapur in 2016. Rani Kapur has also accused Priya Kapur of acting swiftly after Sunjay Kapur's death to assume control of key Sona Group companies without notice to her. Rani Kapur has named 23 entities as defendants in the case.
