New Delhi – External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with ambassadors from European Union (EU) countries on Thursday, ahead of the India-EU Summit scheduled for January 27. The discussions centered on strengthening the India-EU partnership to address global challenges and promote stability.
In a statement released on social media, Jaishankar conveyed that the interaction focused on the "current state of the world with volatility and instability as the new normal". He emphasized the need for stronger India-EU relations to "de-risk the world economy" through cooperation on resilient supply chains. He also noted that stronger ties could "reassure the international community" by providing public goods, such as humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), anti-piracy operations, and development projects. Ultimately, the goal is to "stabilize the global order through stronger trade, mobility, and security partnerships".
The meeting occurred in anticipation of the India-EU Summit, where both sides are expected to announce the conclusion of their trade deal and potentially sign a new security and defense partnership. This partnership may encompass maritime security, cybersecurity, and counterterrorism efforts.
India and the EU are also planning to finalize an agreement on a comprehensive mobility framework. This agreement would facilitate the movement of students, seasonal workers, researchers, and highly skilled professionals, while also promoting research and innovation. Additionally, a Security of Information Agreement is under consideration.
Key leaders from the EU are scheduled to visit India for Republic Day celebrations. Antonio Luís Santos da Costa, President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, will be present as the chief guests at the 77th Republic Day celebrations. The EU leaders will also co-chair the 16th India-EU Summit on January 27. During their visit, they are expected to meet with President Droupadi Murmu and hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. An India-EU Business Forum is also planned on the sidelines of the summit.
India and the European Union have been strategic partners since 2004. The upcoming summit and related meetings underscore the commitment to deepen bilateral ties across various sectors.
