Urvashi Dholakia, a prominent figure in Indian television, is carefully navigating her career, prioritizing quality roles over mere monetary gain. After a period of conscious absence from the screen, Dholakia is set to participate in the reality show "The 50," describing it as a unique and unpredictable experience.
Dholakia, now 46, began her career at the age of six, appearing in a Lux soap commercial. She gained recognition for her role as Komolika in "Kasautii Zindagii Kay", winning several awards for her portrayal of the iconic antagonist. She also won "Bigg Boss 6" in 2012.
In a recent interview, Dholakia addressed the perception of being "overexposed" on television. She explained that she has been deliberately selective about her projects, seeking opportunities that allow her to showcase different facets of her acting abilities. "I've purposely not been around," she stated. "I've already done what I could possibly do, I've set the bar, and now it's my time to explore. As an actor, I need opportunities to show something different".
Dholakia revealed that she often receives offers for roles that are superficially described as "different" but ultimately resemble characters she has already played, often with negative traits. This lack of originality has led her to decline such projects, emphasizing her desire for roles that genuinely challenge and excite her. "When makers approach me, they often say it's a 'different character,' but then it turns out to be something negative that I have already done. Tell me what's different about it, excite me, and then I'll do it," she elaborated.
While acknowledging that television has typecast her to some extent, Dholakia remains open to experimenting with new platforms and mediums. She is particularly intrigued by the younger generation's approach to cinema, which she believes offers fresh perspectives and opportunities for actors. She believes it's important to remain active and visible but not at the cost of compromising her artistic integrity. "The younger generation has a completely different vision of cinema. They look at you in a fresh way, which makes you want to explore new mediums and roles. It's important to stay busy and visible, but not at any cost," she said.
Dholakia's decision to participate in "The 50" reflects her desire to challenge herself and step outside her comfort zone. The reality show, based on the French series "Les Cinquante," brings together 50 celebrities in a competitive environment, promising unpredictable drama and strategic alliances. Dholakia's experience in the industry and her outspoken nature are expected to bring a unique dynamic to the show. "I've been in this industry long enough to know that experience is power," she stated. "At this stage of my life, I choose challenges that mean something to me. The 50 felt right because it's not about being perfect, it's about being present, aware, and emotionally strong". The show is set to premiere on February 1, 2026, on Colors TV and JioHotstar.
Dholakia's career choices reflect a broader sentiment among television actors who feel unfairly categorized and limited by the "TV actor" label. She has previously voiced her frustration with the barriers faced by television actors seeking opportunities in the over-the-top (OTT) space, where casting decisions are often influenced by the perception of overexposure. Dholakia hopes this situation will change, advocating for a more inclusive and equitable industry where actors are recognized for their talent and versatility, regardless of the medium they work in.
