Heavy snowfall disrupts travel: Srinagar airport air services temporarily suspended for safety.

Srinagar, India – Air services at Srinagar Airport have been suspended on Friday, January 23, 2026, due to intense snowfall and poor visibility in the Kashmir Valley. The airport authorities initially reported intermittent cancellations and delays but later announced a complete suspension of flight operations. At least 26 flights to and from Srinagar were canceled due to the adverse weather conditions.

The ongoing snowfall has significantly impacted both arrivals and departures, leading to extended wait times for passengers. Airlines, including IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Air India, have issued advisories regarding potential delays and cancellations, urging passengers to stay in contact with their respective airlines for the latest updates on flight schedules.

IndiGo has temporarily put a hold on take-offs and landings in Srinagar. The airline has also stated that boarding formalities might be completed in advance to ensure they are ready for departure as soon as clearance is received. SpiceJet has cautioned that all departures and arrivals at Srinagar, along with connecting flights, could be affected and has advised passengers to regularly check their flight status. Air India has also acknowledged the impact of the snowfall on its flight operations to and from Srinagar, with ground teams providing assistance and closely monitoring the situation.

Srinagar Airport authorities have confirmed that snow clearance activities are underway on the runways. However, they have indicated that the normalization of operations may take longer than expected due to the continuous snowfall.

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) has also been closed, with traffic movement stopped at Jakh Chowk in Udhampur. Besides NH-44, the Mughal Road, Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumri (SSG) Road, and Sinthan Road were also closed due to fresh snowfall. Authorities have advised commuters to avoid traveling on the affected routes until snow clearance operations are completed and the roads are declared safe.

The meteorological department had warned of an approaching western disturbance that could bring fresh snowfall. Minimum temperatures across Kashmir have dipped below freezing, with Srinagar recording a minimum temperature of -3.4 degrees Celsius on Wednesday night. Sonamarg was the coldest spot in the valley, with temperatures plunging to -6.1 degrees Celsius.

Passengers are advised to verify the latest road status through official Traffic Police channels and to contact their respective airlines for updated flight information. The current weather forecast for Kashmir Division predicts rain and snow during the day and snow showers at night, with a 75% chance of snow during the day and a 35% chance at night.
