PSG Draw Ends Newcastle's Champions League Last-16 Hopes, Sending Them to Play-offs

Newcastle United's Champions League journey will continue in the play-off round after a 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday. Despite a spirited performance against the reigning European champions, the single point wasn't enough to secure a top-eight finish in the Champions League standings. Both Newcastle and PSG will now enter a two-legged play-off next month.

The Magpies showcased resilience, recovering from an early setback that saw Vitinha score for PSG in the 8th minute. Newcastle's goalkeeper, Nick Pope, also saved a penalty from Ousmane Dembele in the 4th minute, preventing an even earlier deficit. Joe Willock's header in first-half stoppage time brought Newcastle level, highlighting the team's determination.

In the second half, Newcastle continued to press, creating opportunities to win the game. Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes, who came off the bench, both had chances to score, but the decisive goal remained elusive. Ultimately, the match ended in a draw, pushing both teams into the play-offs.

The draw for the play-offs is scheduled for Friday, January 30th, determining Newcastle's next opponent. The Magpies will face either Monaco or Qarabag FK in the play-off round. The first leg is slated for February 17th or 18th, with the second leg following on February 24th or 25th. Newcastle will play the first leg away from home.

Newcastle's manager, Eddie Howe, made several changes to the starting lineup, possibly with an eye on the upcoming Premier League clash against Liverpool. Despite the changes, the team delivered a commendable performance against the reigning European champions.

PSG, the current titleholders, also found themselves in the play-offs after failing to secure a win in their last three Champions League matches. They finished the league phase in 11th place with 14 points, while Newcastle finished 12th with the same number of points and goal difference, but fewer goals scored. PSG had to navigate the play-offs last year as well to continue their Champions League campaign.

Despite not achieving automatic qualification for the last 16, Newcastle can draw confidence from their performance in Paris. Their spirited display and tactical flexibility suggest they will be a formidable opponent in the play-offs.
