In a stunning display of skill and opportunism, United States midfielder Malik Tillman etched his name into Bayer Leverkusen's Champions League campaign with a first-half brace against Villarreal. Tillman's performance was pivotal in Leverkusen's dominant start against the Spanish side.
Tillman, making his third Champions League start for Leverkusen at the BayArena, proved to be the difference-maker in the first half. His first goal was "unusual though smart", capitalizing on a howler from Villarreal goalkeeper Arnau Tenas. Tenas' poor clearance was deflected into the net by Tillman, marking his first Champions League goal for Leverkusen.
Leverkusen continued to press, creating several chances before Tillman struck again. Patrik Schick, after having his own chance at goal, provided a brilliant headed assist to Tillman, who was unmarked at the edge of the box. The U.S. international then finished smartly to complete his brace.
Tillman, who wears jersey number 10, is 23 years old. Before joining Bayer Leverkusen, Tillman played for Bayern Munich's senior and second teams, as well as on loan for PSV Eindhoven.
The two-goal lead in the first half propelled Leverkusen to a favorable position in the live table, raising the possibility of a playoff tie against Borussia Dortmund.
Villarreal, currently fourth in La Liga, struggled to find their footing in the first half, reflecting their difficult start to the Champions League campaign. Despite a better spell after the restart and a penalty appeal, they were unable to break down Leverkusen's defense. Alejandro Grimaldo's goal later in the match sealed the victory for Leverkusen.
