Robbie Keane, the Tottenham Hotspur legend, has addressed rumors linking him to the managerial position at his former club, stating that while it was "nice to be linked," he didn't dwell on it. Keane, who scored 122 goals for Tottenham across all competitions during two separate stints, is currently managing Hungarian side Ferencvaros.
The 45-year-old Republic of Ireland icon took over at Ferencvaros on January 6, 2025, replacing Pascal Jansen. Keane's move to Ferencvaros marks his second managerial role, following his departure from Maccabi Tel Aviv in June 2024, where he won a league and cup double.
Prior to his role at Maccabi Tel Aviv, Keane gained coaching experience as an assistant manager at Middlesbrough and with the Republic of Ireland. He also assisted Sam Allardyce at Leeds United for a brief period.
Ferencvaros is a dominant force in Hungarian football, having won the domestic league title for the last six years and a total of 35 times since 1903. Keane joined the team amidst a title battle, as they were one point behind the league leaders, Puskas FC Academy. Ferencvaros also has a chance to compete in European football, facing Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League.
Keane's career began at Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he made his debut at age 17. He then played for Coventry City, Inter Milan, and Leeds United before joining Tottenham in 2002. He quickly became a key player for Spurs, even captaining the club. In 2008, he briefly moved to Liverpool before returning to Tottenham. He later played for LA Galaxy in the MLS, winning three MLS titles and being named MLS and MLS Cup MVP in 2014.
Keane is also the Republic of Ireland's record appearance maker with 146 caps and record goalscorer with 68 goals between 1998 and 2016.
