Washington State Senate Recognizes and Celebrates India's Enduring Democratic Values and Rich Traditions Through Official Resolution.

The Washington State Senate has formally recognized India's democratic traditions by passing Resolution SR-8674 during a session in Olympia. The resolution, adopted with bipartisan support, commemorates India's 77th Republic Day and acknowledges the contributions of the Indian American community to Washington State.

The resolution highlights the strong, multifaceted relationship between Washington State and India, emphasizing shared priorities in agriculture, trade, technology, and critical and emerging technologies. It also recognizes the significant role of the Indian Consulate in Seattle in strengthening ties between the two.

The resolution was introduced by Indian American State Senator Manka Dhingra of the 45th Legislative District and supported by State Senator Vandana Slatter of the 48th Legislative District. All senators present voted in favor of the resolution. Senator Dhingra stated she is proud to honor Republic Day as a symbol of shared values of democracy, diversity and inclusion and the bonds between India and the United States. She also noted that more than 100,000 Indian-Americans call Washington home, enriching every facet of society. Senator Slatter highlighted the contributions of the Indian-American community in Washington State.

To mark the occasion, the Indian Consulate hosted a reception at the Washington State Capitol in Olympia, attended by state senators, members of the House of Representatives, and other dignitaries. The event featured a traditional Indian dance performance. Consul General Prakash Gupta acknowledged the Senate's gesture with a 'Namaste'.

Several other states within the Indian Consulate's jurisdiction, including Alaska, Nebraska, Oregon, and South Dakota, issued proclamations honoring India's Republic Day. Governors and leaders from across the region sent congratulatory messages to India. Montana Governor Greg Gianforte praised the contributions of Indian and Indian American communities to the state's cultural, educational, and economic life. South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden expressed confidence in stronger U.S.-India relations. Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen highlighted shared values and cooperation in trade, technology, and agriculture. U.S. Rep. Kim Schrier of Washington's 8th Congressional District conveyed Republic Day wishes on behalf of the people of Washington.

India is considered the world's most populous democracy. The country adopted universal adult suffrage early in its history, granting all adult citizens equal voting rights. Elections in India commenced in 1951-52. The Washington State Senate's resolution serves as a reaffirmation of the strong ties between the United States and India and a recognition of the values they share.
