Foord's Extra-Time Goal Propels Arsenal to Victory Over Corinthians and the Club World Championship Title

Caitlin Foord etched her name into Arsenal folklore, securing a 3-2 victory over Corinthians in extra time in the FIFA Women's Champions Cup final at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday night. The win crowns Arsenal as the inaugural champions of the competition.

The match was a hard-fought contest, with the Brazilians twice coming from behind to force extra time. Olivia Smith opened the scoring for Arsenal after 14 minutes, capitalizing on a rebound after Stina Blackstenius' initial shot was saved. Corinthians responded with a goal from Gabi Zanotti, whose header deflected off Steph Catley. Lotte Wubben-Moy then restored Arsenal's lead in the 59th minute, heading past Corinthians' goalkeeper Lele.

Late drama saw Corinthians awarded a penalty which was converted by Vic Albuquerque in the 96th minute, sending the game into extra time. Foord, who came off the bench, had a shot blocked in the 75th minute, but she eventually found the net in extra time, beating Lele at the near post after Frida Maanum won possession in midfield.

Arsenal benefited from being mid-season, with players at full fitness, while Corinthians are in their pre-season. The tournament being held in London also favored the UEFA Champions League winners.

The match ended on a worrying note as Arsenal goalkeeper Anneke Borbe collided with Wubben-Moy and required extensive treatment before being stretchered off. She was replaced by Daphne van Domselaar as a concussion substitute in the 12th minute of injury time.

Arsenal's journey to the final saw them defeat AS FAR from Morocco 6-0 in the semi-final. Corinthians reached the final by beating US champions FC Gotham.

With this win, Arsenal adds another trophy to their illustrious history, solidifying their status as one of the most decorated women's clubs in England. The victory marks a historic moment for Australian players Caitlin Foord, Steph Catley, and Kyra Cooney-Cross, who become the first Australians to be crowned football world champions.
