Arsenal Women emerged victorious in the inaugural Women’s Champions Cup, defeating Corinthians 3-2 in a thrilling extra-time encounter at the Emirates Stadium. Caitlin Foord's breakaway goal in the 104th minute sealed the win for the Gunners in front of a crowd of 25,031.
The match was a hard-fought contest, with Corinthians twice coming from behind to level the score. Olivia Smith opened the scoring for Arsenal in the 15th minute, capitalizing on a rebound after Corinthians goalkeeper Leticia punched a shot into her path. However, Corinthians responded quickly, with Gabriela Zanotti's goal crossing the line before Arsenal goalkeeper Anneke Borbe could react.
In the second half, Lotte Wubben-Moy put Arsenal ahead again in the 58th minute, heading in a cross from Emily Fox. Just when it seemed Arsenal had secured the trophy, a late penalty awarded to Corinthians after a foul by Katie McCabe in stoppage time allowed Victoria to equalize, sending the game into extra time.
Foord's decisive goal in extra time secured the victory for Arsenal. However, the closing moments of the match were marred by an injury to Arsenal's goalkeeper Borbe, who was stretchered off the field following a collision in front of her goal.
Arsenal qualified for the tournament as winners of the UEFA Champions League. In their semi-final match, they showcased their dominance with a resounding 6-0 victory over Morocco's ASFAR. Corinthians, the Copa Libertadores champions, reached the final after overcoming Gotham FC in their semi-final. Gotham FC secured third place in the tournament with a 4-0 victory over ASFAR.
