An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 struck the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir early Monday morning. The tremor occurred at approximately 5:35 AM Indian Standard Time (IST).
Initial reports indicate that the epicenter of the earthquake was located in the Pattan area of Baramulla. The National Center of Seismology (NCS) reported the earthquake's coordinates as latitude 34.14 N and longitude 74.41 E, with a depth of 10 km. While some sources reported the magnitude as 4.7, the NCS and other sources have consistently stated it as 4.6.
The earthquake triggered panic among residents, who rushed out of their homes. So far, there have been no reports of any damage or casualties resulting from the earthquake.
The tremors were felt across North India, including Kashmir. Earlier in the day, at around 3:30 AM IST, a separate earthquake of magnitude 4.6 struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, also at a depth of 10 km. The NCS reported the coordinates of this earlier earthquake as latitude 9.03 N and longitude 92.78 E.
Local authorities are continuing to monitor the situation in Baramulla. While the earthquake was strong enough to be felt by many, the absence of reported damage suggests that the region was fortunate this time.
