Barry Trotz is stepping down as general manager of the Nashville Predators, a decision that has sent ripples through the hockey world just weeks before the NHL's Olympic freeze and a month before the trade deadline. Trotz will remain in the role until a successor is found. A news conference is scheduled for noon CT to officially announce the move.
Trotz, 63, took over as general manager in the summer of 2023, succeeding David Poile, who had been the team's only GM since its inception in 1997. This was Trotz's second stint with the Predators, having previously served as the team's head coach from 1998 to 2014. He is considered one of the most significant figures in Nashville hockey history. After leaving Nashville in 2014, Trotz coached the Washington Capitals, leading them to a Stanley Cup victory in 2018, and later the New York Islanders.
The Predators are currently sitting four points outside of a playoff spot in the Western Conference. After a slow start to the 2025-26 season, the team had rallied to close the gap. However, their playoff hopes remain uncertain.
With the trade deadline looming, Trotz's departure raises questions about the Predators' plans. Just last week, Trotz stated that he would consider all options, including trading center Ryan O'Reilly. O'Reilly, 34, is having a strong season, with 18 goals and 51 points in 54 games. He is in the third year of a four-year, $18 million contract and is set to become an unrestricted free agent after next season. Other players like Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault and Michael Bunting have also been mentioned in trade rumors.
It is unclear whether the Predators will be buyers or sellers at the deadline. Trotz had previously stated that "everything has to be on the table" and that he would listen to all offers. Chris Mason, a former Predators goalie and current TV analyst, suggested that Trotz would be open to deals but would respect O'Reilly's no-trade clause if he had one.
Some reports suggest the Predators might consider trading Michael Bunting, who is in the final year of his contract. The New York Islanders reportedly showed interest in Bunting earlier in the season. Michael McCarron's name has also surfaced in trade discussions.
Trotz's tenure as GM saw the Predators make the playoffs in his first season after he fired coach John Hynes and hired Andrew Brunette. However, after spending $100 million in free agency to acquire players like Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault, and Brady Skjei, the team underperformed in the 2024-25 season and missed the playoffs.
The search for a new general manager will begin immediately. Trotz will remain in his position to assist with the transition.
