After nearly three weeks in Pakistani custody, Border Security Force (BSF) Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw was handed back to India on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. The repatriation took place at approximately 10:30 am at the Joint Check Post in Attari, Amritsar. The Border Security Force (Punjab Frontier) confirmed the handover was conducted peacefully and in accordance with established protocols.

Inspector General (IG), Punjab Frontier, BSF, Atul Fulzele, verified that Purnam Kumar Shaw, who had been in the custody of Pakistan Rangers since April 23, 2025, was successfully repatriated to India. Following his return, Shaw underwent a medical examination and debriefing.

Purnam Kumar Shaw, a member of the 182nd Battalion, was apprehended by Pakistan Rangers on April 23 after he inadvertently crossed the International Border near Punjab's Ferozepur. At the time, the BSF constable was on duty near the border fence and carrying his service weapon. He reportedly moved towards a shaded area to rest and unintentionally crossed into Pakistani territory.

The BSF has stated that Shaw's return was made possible through consistent efforts, including regular flag meetings and communication through established channels with Pakistan Rangers.

News of Shaw's release brought relief to his family and hometown. Concerns had been growing, with family members expressing their anxieties over the delay in his return. Local leaders had also appealed for swift action to ensure his safe return.

BSF sources indicated that in similar situations, the jawan would typically be returned on the same day or the following day. Purnam Kumar Shaw's return occurred on the fourth day of a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, which had come into effect on May 10. He was initially captured a day after the Pahalgam terror attack.
