Former Indian Men's Hockey Team defender Birendra Lakra has been appointed as the assistant coach for the Indian Junior Men's Hockey Team. The announcement was made by Hockey India on Saturday, May 24, 2025, marking a significant step towards strengthening the team's preparations for the Junior World Cup later this year.

Lakra, a veteran of the game at 35 years old, brings a wealth of experience and tactical understanding to the junior squad. He will be working closely with PR Sreejesh, the legendary goalkeeper who currently serves as the coach of the team. This collaboration between two former teammates is expected to create a synergistic coaching environment, benefiting the young players immensely.

"It is a great honour to be part of the Indian Junior Men's setup at such an important time," Lakra stated in a release. "I know what it takes to wear the India jersey, and now I look forward to helping the next generation of players prepare for the big stage." He further added, "Working alongside someone like Sreejesh, who has been a teammate and an inspiration, is an exciting challenge. We are committed to building a fearless and well-prepared team for the tournaments ahead, especially the all-important Junior World Cup later this year.”

Sreejesh also expressed his enthusiasm about Lakra's inclusion in the coaching staff. "Having Birendra join us is a massive boost," he said. "He brings a wealth of experience, tactical intelligence, and calm leadership that will be invaluable to these young players. We have shared many battles on the field, and I'm confident we will bring the same synergy and commitment to this new chapter as coaches. Together, we want to nurture a squad that can make the country proud.”

Lakra's career highlights include representing India at the London 2012 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where the team secured a historic bronze medal. His contributions also extend to India's campaigns in the World Cup, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games, including a gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games and a bronze in 2018.

The Junior Men's World Cup is scheduled to be held in Chennai and Madurai from November 28 to December 10. Lakra's primary focus will be on fortifying the team's defensive structure and enhancing their overall game temperament. His experience as a defender will be crucial in mentoring the young players and preparing them for the challenges of international competition. Hockey India's decision to appoint Lakra reflects a strategic move to blend experience with youthful talent, creating a well-rounded team capable of achieving success on the global stage.
