The titans of Tamil cinema, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, are potentially uniting for a film project, igniting excitement among fans and industry insiders alike. The news, confirmed by Kamal Haasan himself, has been stirring for quite some time, with rumors circulating about a possible collaboration directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj.

At a recent award function, Kamal Haasan addressed the speculation, stating that a project with Rajinikanth is indeed in the works. While details remain scarce, his words hinted at a long-standing desire to work together. He playfully alluded to past competition, stating, "We were separate because they gave one biscuit to both of us... But the half biscuit makes us both happy, so we'll come together". He further emphasized that any perceived rivalry was manufactured by others, clarifying, "We don't have any competition between us. It's important that we got the chance to do this".

The two stars have a history of sharing the screen in their earlier careers, appearing in films such as Apoorva Ragangal, Moondru Mudichu, Avargal, and Pathinaru Vayathinile. Their last on-screen collaboration was in the 1979 film Alavuddinum Athbutha Vilakkum, where Kamal Haasan played the protagonist, Alavuddin, and Rajinikanth portrayed the antagonist, Kamaruddin.

The potential reunion has fueled speculation about the director and genre of the film. While Lokesh Kanagaraj's name has been associated with the project, there has been no official confirmation. Kanagaraj previously mentioned his desire to include Kamal Haasan in the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), given his admiration for the actor, fueling speculation that this project could be a part of the LCU.

Kamal Haasan was last seen in Mani Ratnam's Thug Life. Thug Life, a gangster action drama, was released on June 5, 2025, and stars Haasan alongside Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan and others. The film follows Rangaraaya Sakthivel, a mafia kingpin seeking revenge after being betrayed. Rajinikanth, on the other hand, recently starred in Coolie, which was released last month. He is currently filming for Jailer 2.

The prospect of Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan sharing the screen again after so long has generated immense excitement. Haasan's recent statement, "This was long coming," suggests that this collaboration has been a topic of discussion for years. While concrete details are still under wraps, the confirmation of the project has set the stage for what could be a landmark moment in Tamil cinema.
