The battle over the late businessman Sunjay Kapur's estimated Rs 30,000 crore estate has taken a new turn as his sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith, publicly voiced her support for Sunjay's children with his ex-wife, actress Karisma Kapoor. Samaira and Kiaan Kapur have approached the Delhi High Court, challenging a will that they suspect is "forged and fabricated". They are seeking their rightful share in their father's property.
Mandhira Kapur Smith has expressed her support for Karisma Kapoor's children amidst the ongoing legal battle. She stated that she finds it baffling that the will did not earmark anything for Samaira and Kiaan, considering the strong bond they shared with their father. According to ANI, she said, "I stand by them because I do not think that if anyone knows the relationship they have had with their father and for their father not to have them a part of the will is just doesn't add up. Doesn't make sense. So I stand by them".
The dispute arose after a will surfaced on March 21, 2025, allegedly leaving Sunjay Kapur's entire personal estate to his widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur. Samaira and Kiaan have alleged that Priya Sachdev suppressed the will for over seven weeks before revealing it at a family meeting on July 30, 2025. They have requested the court to declare them as Class I legal heirs and grant them a one-fifth share each in their father's assets. The suit names Priya Kapur, her minor son, Sunjay's mother Rani Kapur, and the executor of the will, Shradha Suri Marwah, as defendants.
The Delhi High Court has directed Priya Sachdev Kapur to disclose all movable and immovable assets owned by Sunjay Kapur at the time of his death. Summons have been issued, with written statements to be filed in two weeks and replications in one week thereafter. Replies to the interim relief plea must also be filed in two weeks, with rejoinders in a week. The matter will be taken up next on October 9 for consideration of an ad-interim injunction.
Mandhira Kapur Smith has also accused Priya Sachdev of coercing their mother, Rani Kapur, into signing certain papers. She claimed that Rani Kapur was "forced to sign documents behind locked doors" and was "left to the mercy of a select few for survival". Days after Sunjay's death, Priya was appointed as a Non-Executive Director at Sona Comstar.
Mandhira Kapur Smith expressed that the wealth was supposed to be distributed equally among the families, but one person has come in and taken everything. She also revealed that her mother doesn't even have a roof over her head. "We're not asking for what is not our right. My dad created all this. My dad created it for my mother. My brother grew it, like all Indian families do. And then it was supposed to be distributed equally among the families. So again, one person has come in and taken everything, and my mother doesn't even have a roof over her head," Smith told ANI.
Mandhira also spoke about her relationship with Karisma Kapoor, "So Kareshwa Kapoor also known as Lulo to us is uh has we've grown up together we were best friends. um we've she's family to us she's literally grown up in our house. we've uh her kids are obviously very dear to us we are all in touch. um and I think you know we're going to stand by each other and do what is. right we are a family".
The legal battle is ongoing, and the court's direction to disclose assets is seen as a positive step towards bringing more clarity to the matter.
