Sushila Karki was sworn in as Nepal's interim Prime Minister tonight. The swearing-in ceremony took place after 8 p.m.. Karki's appointment follows the resignation of KP Sharma Oli on Tuesday amidst widespread protests.
Karki was the top choice of the 'Gen Z' protest group to lead the country. She was chosen to lead the interim government after a meeting between President Ran Chandra Paudel, Nepal's top military officials, and Gen Z representatives.
Sushila Karki served as Nepal's first female chief justice from July 2016 to June 2017. Born on June 7, 1952, Karki is the eldest of seven children. She has a BA from Mahendra Morang Campus (1972) in Nepal and an MA in political science from Banaras Hindu University in India (1975). Karki started her legal career in 1979 and was appointed as an ad hoc judge in the Supreme Court in 2009, becoming a permanent judge in 2010.
Karki succeeds KP Sharma Oli, who resigned after a youth-led siege that overthrew the ruling government. The protests were triggered by a ban on social media and fueled by frustrations with corruption. The violence resulted in more than 50 deaths and over 1,000 injuries.
Karki faces the immediate challenge of restoring law and order in Nepal following the recent protests. She plans to guide the country into its next elections, which she aims to conduct in six months to a year.
Karki's husband's role in a plane hijacking 52 years ago has drawn attention. She is known for her zero-tolerance policy against corruption. Some Gen Z representatives have questioned Karki's impartiality, while others fully support her. Kathmandu mayor Balendra Shah has endorsed Karki.
