A significant earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 struck Guwahati, Assam, at 4:41 PM today, sending tremors across North Bengal and Bhutan. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the epicenter was located in the Udalguri district, at a shallow depth of 5 kilometers.

The tremors were widely felt, causing panic among residents who rushed out of their homes and buildings in Guwahati and other areas. While there were no immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage, officials indicated the possibility of damage to buildings due to the quake's intensity and shallow depth. Disaster management authorities are closely monitoring the situation and assessing potential damage.

The NCS provided details about the earthquake on social media, stating, "EQ of M: 5.8, On: 14/09/2025 16:41:50 IST, Lat: 26.78 N, Long: 92.33 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Udalguri, Assam". They also shared a link to the BhooKamp App for more information.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged the earthquake in a post on X, urging residents to stay alert and confirming that the situation was being actively monitored. Former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also expressed prayers for everyone's safety and well-being.

The earthquake was also felt in other parts of the Northeast region, including Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. In Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, residents ran out of their houses and shops in panic. Tremors were also experienced in parts of North Bengal, including Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar.

India's Northeast region is known for its high seismic activity, making earthquakes a frequent occurrence. The region is situated in a seismically active zone, making it vulnerable to tremors and quakes of varying magnitudes. Just days before this earthquake, on September 2nd, a smaller quake with a magnitude of 3.5 struck Sonitpur district. In 2021, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake shook Sonitpur district, causing structural damage across several towns.

While a magnitude of 6.0 earthquake that hit Assam on April 28, 2021, remains the largest quake to occur near Guwahati in the past 100 years, today's event serves as a reminder of the region's vulnerability to seismic activity.
