A fatal accident occurred on Ring Road near Dhaula Kuan in Delhi on Sunday, involving a BMW and a motorcycle, resulting in the death of a senior official from the Ministry of Finance and injuries to his wife. The incident has sparked a police investigation, including scrutiny of potential evidence tampering and questions surrounding the actions of the BMW's occupants following the crash.
Navjot Singh, the deceased, was a Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs. He was riding his motorcycle with his wife, Sandeep Kaur, when a BMW struck them from behind near the Delhi Cantonment metro station. Initial reports indicate that the BMW was found overturned at the scene, with the motorcycle nearby. Eyewitnesses reported that a woman was driving the car at the time of the collision.
Following the accident, the occupants of the BMW, a woman and her husband, transported Navjot Singh and his wife to Nulife Hospital in GTB Nagar, approximately 17-19 kilometers from the crash site. Navjot Singh was declared dead at the hospital, while his wife is currently receiving treatment for her injuries. The decision to take the victims to a hospital so far away has raised concerns, especially after it was revealed that the hospital is co-owned by the family of the woman driving the BMW. According to sources, her father is one of the owners.
The police have registered an FIR in connection with the accident, invoking sections 281, 125B, 105, and 238 of the BNS Act. A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team has visited the accident site to gather evidence and examine the vehicles involved. Both the BMW and the motorcycle have been seized as part of the investigation. Authorities are investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash, with a focus on determining the cause of the accident and whether any traffic violations occurred. The police are yet to record the statements of the BMW's occupants, who are also hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the incident.
The son of the deceased has questioned why his parents were taken to a hospital so far from the accident site and believes that the delay in treatment may have contributed to his father's death. He was informed about the accident by a family friend and found it perplexing that his parents were transported to a hospital with limited facilities, located 20 km away. He argues that immediate medical attention at a closer facility might have saved his father's life.
The accident caused a temporary disruption to traffic in the area, which was later restored after the vehicles were removed. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities exploring all possible angles to determine the sequence of events and establish responsibility for the crash.
