During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent interaction with beneficiaries of the PM-KUSUM scheme in Banswara, Rajasthan, a farmer from Barmer sparked laughter and applause with a witty remark directed at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's old "Aalu se Sona" (potatoes to gold) comment. The event, which took place on September 25, 2025, also saw Modi inaugurating development projects worth over ₹1.22 lakh crore, emphasizing his government's focus on growth and delivery.
The farmer lauded the Modi government's policies, stating that he had transformed from merely an "Annadata" (provider of food) to an "Urjadata" (provider of energy), thanks to the government's solar initiatives. He then took a swipe at Rahul Gandhi's previous statement, saying that someone had promised "Aalu se Sona niklega" (potatoes will turn into gold), but nothing like that ever happened. This prompted PM Modi to burst into laughter. The farmer's remark highlighted the contrast between the Modi government's practical approach to renewable energy and what was perceived as unrealistic promises from the opposition.
The "Aalu se Sona" remark dates back to Rahul Gandhi's campaign rallies in 2017, where he claimed that he would install a machine that would convert potatoes into gold. This statement was widely ridiculed and has been repeatedly used by BJP leaders to criticize Gandhi. However, it's important to note that Gandhi stated he was quoting PM Modi's promise.
PM Modi also inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for multiple development projects in Rajasthan worth over Rs 1,22,100 crore. The projects aim to strengthen infrastructure, employment, and welfare in the state. Key projects include the Rs 42,000 crore Mahi-Banswara nuclear plant and 15 drinking water projects across 15 districts worth Rs 5,884 crore. Appointment letters were also distributed to 15,000 youths for various government posts.
