Tensions flared in Guwahati on Thursday, September 25, 2025, as protests outside the residence of Siddhartha Sharma, the manager of late singer Zubeen Garg, turned violent. The unrest occurred while a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was conducting raids at Sharma's home in the Dhirenpara locality and the residence of Northeast India Festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta in Geetanagar.
The protests, fueled by public anger and demands for Sharma's arrest in connection with the investigation into Zubeen Garg's death, saw demonstrators gathering outside Sharma's residence. The situation escalated as some protesters attempted to force their way into the apartment building where Sharma lived. Some members of the agitated crowd hurled stones at police vehicles. Security personnel responded by using batons to disperse the mob.
According to reports, several protesters, identified as Zubeen Garg fans, sustained injuries, including head injuries, during the clashes with security forces. Over fifteen police personnel, including CID officials, were also injured in the melee. In addition to injuries, the violence resulted in damage to several shops in the area, and at least two CID vehicles were reportedly vandalized.
The police have urged citizens to maintain calm and return home to prevent further escalation of the situation. Despite the appeals, some protesters remained near Sharma's residence, and security forces maintained a high alert to manage the remaining crowd.
Siddhartha Sharma, who has been Zubeen Garg's manager since 2014, is currently absconding. He is alleged to have acquired wealth and properties worth several crores and had allegedly taken over as the Managing Director of Zubeen Garg Music LLP since 2023. Sharma's family members, who lived in the same flat, have not been seen since Garg's death on September 19.
The Assam government has formed a 10-member SIT, led by Special DGP M P Gupta, to investigate the circumstances surrounding Zubeen Garg's death in Singapore, where he was attending the Northeast India Festival. Authorities in Singapore reported that the singer died of drowning in the sea. The investigation aims to determine if any negligence or other factors contributed to the singer's death. As part of the investigation, the SIT raided Sharma's locked apartment in Dhirenpara in the presence of a magistrate. Another SIT team raided Mahanta's residence in Geetanagar, where only two household helpers were present.
