Actor Vijay's Compassion: Rs. 20 Lakh Relief for Families Affected by Tragic Stampede Loss

The tragic stampede at actor-turned-politician Vijay's rally in Karur on September 27, 2025, has prompted an outpouring of grief and support for the victims and their families. The incident, which occurred during a political rally organized by Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), resulted in the deaths of at least 39 people, including children and women, and left over 80 others injured.

In response to this devastating event, Vijay has announced a compensation of ₹20 lakh (approximately $24,000 USD) to the families of each of the deceased. This decision underscores his commitment to supporting those affected by the tragedy and providing them with some measure of financial relief during this difficult time.

The stampede occurred in Velusamypuram, along the Karur–Erode highway, as large crowds surged towards the stage barricades upon Vijay's arrival, which was delayed by more than six hours. The massive turnout, exceeding the permitted number of attendees, coupled with the prolonged wait under harsh conditions, contributed to the chaos and ultimately led to the tragic crush. Eyewitnesses reported that the crowd size was significantly larger than the permitted 10,000, with some estimates suggesting as many as 60,000 people were present.

In the wake of the tragedy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident. He has also announced an ex gratia payment of ₹10 lakh (approximately $12,000 USD) to the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh (approximately $1,200 USD) for those injured. The Chief Minister has directed hospitals to provide the best possible medical assistance to the injured and has tasked ministers and officials with overseeing relief efforts.

Expressing his profound grief and sorrow, Vijay stated, "My heart is broken; I am in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow,”. He extended his deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the speedy recovery of those undergoing treatment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his condolences, describing the incident as "deeply saddening".

This is not the first time that Vijay's rallies have faced safety concerns. In November 2024, Vijay announced a solatium of ₹2 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives in accidents during the first state conference of his party. Following the launch of his political party in October of last year, at least six deaths were reported by the media. Despite police-imposed restrictions, the sheer scale of public turnout has repeatedly overwhelmed local infrastructure.
