The Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the death of singer and actor Zubeen Garg has discovered financial transactions amounting to approximately ₹1 crore linked to his bodyguard, Nandeshwar Borah, and an associate named Baishya. The funds were reportedly routed through their accounts over the past four to five years.
Sources indicate that Garg entrusted these funds to his personal security officers to assist people in need, with distributions made via GPay upon request. The SIT is currently examining the money trail to determine if it has any connection to Garg's death, which occurred under suspicious circumstances in Singapore last month. Officials have called the financial findings a significant development in the ongoing investigation.
Investigators are also scrutinizing data recovered from Garg's mobile phone, aiming to map the flow of funds and identify other critical details that could shed light on the case. Particular attention is being paid to the month before Garg's planned trip to Singapore, with authorities reviewing all communications and financial records from that period. The SIT is investigating whether these monetary transactions hold significance in understanding the circumstances surrounding the singer's death.
In addition to the financial investigation, the SIT has summoned several individuals for questioning at the CID office based on these findings. Authorities emphasize that the investigation is ongoing and being conducted with the utmost diligence to uncover all aspects of the case.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the state government has requested the Enforcement Directorate and the Income Tax Department to investigate the financial aspects of the Zubeen Garg death case. He expressed hope that the central agencies would take cognizance of the matter.
Garg passed away on September 19 while swimming in the sea off Singapore. Rupkamal Kalita, one of the eight individuals present on the yacht in Singapore at the time of Garg's death, has contacted the Assam Police and will appear before the SIT. The Chief Minister added that the other seven individuals have not yet responded to the summons. The government is urging them to cooperate with the investigation.
CM Sarma clarified that the Assam Police is not required to go to Singapore for the investigation because, under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT), any evidence gathered by the Singapore Police will be shared with them. The request has already been sent to Singapore.
The SIT has already arrested North East India festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen's manager Siddharth Sharma, drummer Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and co-singer Amritprabha Mahanta. Statements have also been recorded from Zubeen's cousin Rituprayag Garg, the caretaker of his studio at Jonali, Abhimanyu Tanti, Zubeen's domestic help, Sadhan Nath, and two female singers.
Garima Saikia Garg, Zubeen Garg's wife, returned the second autopsy report to the SIT. The Singapore police's preliminary investigation indicated that Garg died by drowning.
The SIT had sent notices to nine Assamese NRIs based in Singapore who were with Zubeen Garg on September 19. However, only Rup Kamal Kalita has agreed to appear before the SIT. The SIT had set a deadline of October 6 for their appearance.
Zubeen's manager, Siddharth Sharma, provided the SIT with details about the party on September 18, including the organizers, duration, and attendees. The SIT has recovered Zubeen's mobile phone, tablets, and key documents, which have been sent for forensic and laboratory testing.
